The weather was finally nice enough to put the camera, computer, and arduino outside and try a continuous rotation shot. I really need to replace the servo with a stepper motor.

servo pan

A test of a servo-driven pan head. The servo isn't precise enough to make smooth motion in tiny increments.

camera sweep

A first test of a motion controlled camera and time lapse shooting.

Having recently acquired an Arduino and retrieved the servos from my radio control hobby past, I whipped up this quick test to see how motion can work with timelapse. The Arduino tells the servo to step one degree, rotating the camera, which then takes a shot. The camera was bolted to a wood plate balanced over the center of the servo's rotation. A big clamp held the whole thing upright.

Any permanent set up needs to be very stable and the servo alone does not have enough precision: a step of one degree is far too coarse for smooth motion.

how to paint a mosaic

We decided that the wall behind our kitchen counter needed something.

Painting a bit map on the wall involves the following steps:
1. find an image and convert it to a 2 colour bitmap with pixel dimensions as wide and high, in inches, as the surface to be painted.
2. cover the surface with strips of masking tape
3. draw a grid on the masking tape
4. transfer the pattern to the wall and cut and peel the masking tape
5. paint the wall
6. peel the tape

(step 6 is surprisingly frustrating.)

snow egg

We finally had enough snow and the right temperatures to have snow that sticks. We made a snow man and then this snow egg complete with snow couch where Riley happily sat, eating snow and drinking snow from a cup.
